History records show that St. Edith’s was served by Canons of the Premonstratensian Order at Welbeck Abbey from around 1150 until the Reformation.
The church was chosen for this as it has many unspoilt pre–reformation features.
A documentary on the work of the Gilbertine Order, the only monastic order to be founded in England, has recently been completed. It included herb gardens, kitchens, education, illumination of manuscripts, and the mass which was filmed at St Edith’s. The church was stripped of all post-reformation furnishings revealing the stunning altar stone.
Father Hilary lead Gilbertine Oblates, actors and local extras in the mass, followed by a picnic in glorious sunshine.
